Questions about this product
When will my trout ship and arrive?
Trout ship on Mondays and Thursdays for delivery on Tuesdays or Fridays. When demand is low, we ship only on Monday. We will contact you with your delivery date. Please contact us with any special circumstances. Overnight service describes transit after shipment, not the day after you order.
Can rainbow trout live in my pond all year?
Only where the pond stays cool enough and has enough dissolved oxygen through the warmest part of the year. In many warm-water ponds, trout are a cool-season fish with a planned harvest before conditions become unsuitable. Use measured pond temperatures and oxygen conditions to plan, rather than air temperature alone.
Should I choose rainbow trout fry, fingerlings or juveniles?
Choose for your goal and the fish already in the pond. Rainbow trout fry are the smallest stage and require more protection and attention during grow-out. Rainbow trout fingerlings and juveniles offer larger starting sizes. Compare the actual size range in each listing, and consider existing predators before choosing the smallest fish on price alone.
What does triploid mean?
Triploid fish have three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. All triploid grass carp are sterile. Rainbow trout can also be produced as sterile triploids, and we can produce triploid rainbow trout. Some states require triploid rainbow trout for certain stocking locations.
Food-fish growers may prefer female triploid rainbow trout because they avoid the energy costs of normal egg development and may reach larger harvest sizes than maturing diploid trout under suitable growing conditions. Growth and final size depend on the fish and growing conditions.
If you need triploid trout, contact us before ordering from our trout collection so we can confirm available options, shipment eligibility and the required permits or certification.
Can the fish sit on my porch until I get home?
No. Arrange for someone to be present when FedEx delivers, receive the fish immediately and introduce them into their prepared pond or tank within 15 minutes of the logged delivery time. Direct sun, extreme heat or extreme cold can quickly become fatal. If nobody can be there, contact us before the shipment is scheduled.
