Gypsum Pond Clarifier
For Clearing Muddy Water Naturally
Fast-Acting & Long-Term Clay and Sediment Control
Restore clarity to muddy ponds with this natural, soil-safe solution. Gypsum binds suspended clay and fine particles, gently clearing water without harsh chemicals—perfect for ponds affected by runoff, livestock activity, or disturbed banks.
Fish-Safe: Non-toxic and gentle on aquatic life. Ideal for ponds stocked with gamefish, forage, or ornamental species.
Application Rate:
Apply 5-10 bags per ¼ acre of pond surface area.
Use the higher rate for severely muddy water or heavy clay content.
Why It Works:
Start with our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test to see whether your pond water responds to gypsum before investing in a full application. Mix our pond gypsum with pond water in a bucket, using a paint mixer to create a slurry, then distribute it across the pond. Follow the starting rate on the bag and assess the water’s response before applying more. For watershed ponds, you can also apply gypsum along the bank where rainwater runoff enters. Many of our customers use this method so incoming runoff carries gypsum into the pond. Many pond owners find that two to three applications per year are needed before they see longer-lasting improvements in clarity. Let your pond’s response guide repeat applications; continued muddy runoff can bring in new sediment.
Effective in Problem Areas: Works especially well in clay-heavy regions across the U.S. where suspended particulates cloud pond water.
Tips for Faster Results:
-
Do not dump gypsum directly into the pond. Always premix for best results.
-
For faster clarity, use a power drill mixer to create a slurry.

Questions about this product
What is the difference between gypsum and bentonite?
Pond gypsum helps clear muddy water by causing suspended clay particles to settle. Granular bentonite absorbs water and swells to help seal pathways where water escapes through pond soil. Choose gypsum for suspended-clay cloudiness and bentonite to help seal subsurface leaks and surface cracks in pond soil and earthen pond dams. They serve different purposes and aren’t interchangeable.
What makes Newalla’s pond gypsum different?
Our pond gypsum helps clear muddy water by bringing suspended clay particles together so they settle to the bottom. We screen it through a series of screens to remove most large chunks, producing a fine powder that mixes readily with water for even application. A small amount of residue is normal. Choose gypsum intended for pond application rather than repurposed sheetrock, which can contain paper, coatings and other materials unsuitable for that use.
Should I test my pond water before ordering a full gypsum application?
Yes. Start with our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test to see how your own pond water responds before committing to bags or a pallet. It’s a simple, inexpensive step that helps you make an informed purchase. If the sample clears, you can move forward with pond gypsum with confidence that your water responds to the application. Follow the bag’s starting rate and assess your pond’s response before applying more.
How much gypsum does my pond need?
Start with 5–10 40 lb bags of pond gypsum per ¼ acre of pond surface area, following the bag’s directions. Use the higher starting rate for severely muddy water or heavy clay. Mix the gypsum with water to make a slurry, distribute it across the pond, and assess the response before additional applications. Your pond may require more than one application to achieve the desired clarity.
How do I apply pond gypsum?
Start with our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test to see whether your pond water responds to gypsum before investing in a full application. Many pond owners find that two to three applications per year are needed before they see longer-lasting improvements in clarity. Let your pond’s response guide repeat applications; continued muddy runoff can bring in new sediment.
Will gypsum clear green water or algae?
Pond gypsum helps clear muddy water caused by suspended clay. It does not kill algae. If your pond is green from an algae bloom, gypsum won’t address the cause. Use our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test to check how your pond water responds before purchasing a full application.
How quickly should gypsum improve my pond’s clarity?
Start with our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test and follow its observation instructions. A positive result shows that your pond water responds to gypsum, but a small sample won’t establish an exact clearing time for the entire pond. After your pond gypsum application, watch for improving clarity as suspended clay settles. The amount applied, how evenly it is distributed and continued muddy runoff all affect the response. Use those observations to guide any additional application.
Can I apply pond gypsum when fish are already present?
Yes. Our pond gypsum can be applied to stocked ponds to help clear suspended-clay cloudiness. Start with our Gypsum Pond Clarity Test to confirm that your water responds, then follow the bag’s starting rate and application directions. Mix it into a slurry and distribute it across the pond rather than dumping it in one spot. When applied as directed, our pond gypsum helps improve water clarity while allowing your existing fish population to remain in the pond.
